🎭 Relaxed Theatre Performances

Many UK theatres now offer “relaxed performances” — standard shows adapted for people with autism, learning difficulties, or sensory needs. House lights stay on low, loud effects are reduced, and there’s no pressure to stay seated or stay quiet.

What changes during a relaxed performance?

Where to find them

🎭 Visual stories

Most theatres send a “visual story” before relaxed performances — a document with photos of the theatre, the route to your seat, the characters, and a simplified plot summary. This helps your child know what to expect. Ask when booking.

🎫 The CEA Card (Free Carer Ticket)

🎫 One card, free companion tickets at every cinema

The CEA Card costs £6 per year and entitles a disabled person to one free companion/carer ticket whenever they buy a full-price cinema ticket. It’s accepted at over 90% of UK cinemas.

You’ll need evidence of disability — DLA/PIP award letter, Blue Badge, or a letter from a medical professional. Apply online at ceacard.co.uk.

The card works for any screening, not just autism-friendly ones.

💡 Tips for Cinema Visits

Even autism-friendly screenings can feel overwhelming for some children. These tips can help:

📷 Visit the cinema first without watching a film. Walk around, see the screens, buy popcorn. A practice visit removes the unknown.
🎧 Bring ear defenders or noise-cancelling headphones. Even with reduced sound, cinema speakers are powerful.
💺 Choose an aisle seat near the exit so you can leave easily if needed without disturbing others.
🍿 Bring familiar snacks from home. Cinema food queues can be stressful. Most autism-friendly screenings allow own food.
📺 Watch the trailer at home first. Knowing what the film is about reduces anxiety. YouTube has trailers for every current release.
Arrive early. Doors often open 15–30 minutes before the film. Settling in while it’s quiet is much calmer than arriving to a busy screen.
💻 Not ready for the cinema?

Streaming services are a great stepping stone. Try watching a film at home with the lights dimmed and volume up slightly — this builds familiarity with the “cinema experience” in a safe environment first.
